Rooibos is a healthy option for children this festive season

With school holidays and the festive season around the corner, there is a lot to be excited about – long summer days spent by the pool, the joy of gifts and giving, as well as quality time spent with family and friends. This time of year also brings with it many bright and colourful sugary treats for children, which is why healthy beverage options like Rooibos are a great thirst-quenching solution.

Parents are becoming increasingly health-conscious, questioning product ingredients and the potential negative effects on physical and mental development for children. One of the biggest concerns is the potential harm posed by colourants, preservatives and other additives found in many food and beverage options on the market.

“There is a growing awareness around the detrimental effects of sugar and other additives found in a disproportionately large number of beverages on the market that are targeted at kids,” explains Tea4Kidz Marketing Manager, Candice Sessions. “Parents are increasingly looking for more natural options without added sugar and preservatives, which is propelling the movement towards beverages such as Tea4Kidz.”

Tea4Kidz, Laager’s range of Rooibos teas that is specially geared towards kids, provides parents with a healthier drink option for their young ones. Available in six flavours (including the new Tea4Kidz+ range with added Vitamin C), the beverage has all the associated benefits of Rooibos, including boosting immunity and relieving symptoms of allergies.

Laager Rooibos is a member of the South African Rooibos Council (SARC), an independent organisation responsibly promoting Rooibos and its attributes to the consumer. According to SARC, Rooibos tea – free of caffeine, sugar and preservatives – has formed part of the diet of South African children for generations because of its ability to cure and soothe. It can also help relieve a range of ailments in children such as food allergies, stomach cramps, eczema and insomnia.

“Insomnia is not necessarily a condition that people associate with children, yet there are many children suffering from interrupted or overall lack of sleep,” explained Sessions. Sleep is vital for everyone, but for children in particular, as this is when the growth hormones are released. The calming properties in Rooibos are known to soothe and ease nervous tension, promoting a good night’s sleep.

In addition to these many benefits, Rooibos is also rich in antioxidants that fight destructive free radicals, eliminate toxins and protect the liver, while also helping to strengthen the immune system – this means fewer runny noses and colds.
